Joey Deserves A Round Of Applause

The University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans just ended the UH-Rainbows 15 game series winning streak over the weekend in a 4-3 win. Joey Estrella gets criticized for not winning at the Division I level where most of the elite players in college compete. However, to put together a win and to push the Rainbows to eleven innings in another game was sweet for the Vulcan Baseball Program. Under severe disadvantages and a small budget the Vulcans are able to compete and win a game or two versus some of the elite programs around the country. Estrella is doing a heck of a job, runs a clean program and his teams always competes tough to the end with many local players. Will this season be different? What are your thoughts about UHH going to division II for earlier start?

Even though the Vulcans don't have a winning record every year they are doing good. But I think having a winning tradition against a DII or DIII schedule is better and to have a chance to go to a world series championship every year as a reality is better than having a Division I schedule. Most Hilo fans don't show up any way. Too bad Charminade and BYU don't have programs. The PAC West should push Hawaii to pursue those options. I believe it would have been better than to have soccer. Because of title IX, mens soccer just killed baseball. I think more Hawaii males would benefit from baseball than soccer, most of the local soccer teams have recruited from the mainland anyway. Baseball has a better fan base in Hawaii than soccer. I think HPU and UHH should join a DII conference in California or even go back to NAIA.

News just got worse. Budget crunch for next year. They already lost 18 games for softball. They already lost so many games going DI. Maybe they will be forced to stay DI. This will be an excuse to save money????

There are so many local baseball players that go to the mainland to play collegiate ball. It would be great to have those players have a chance to play at home in front of local crowds.

Joey needs to retire, he's been there tooooooo.... long. 31 years at one program is ridiculous. This is not a non profit charity... Time for a change, thank you Joey but you need to run for Mayor or be the new AD.....
